Design Files: Exploring the Fifth Dawn Handoff

Published 2 November 2026 · Atlas Division

A look at the original designs behind the final set of the Mirrodin block.

The Design Files series continues with an examination of the Fifth Dawn handoff. As the final set in the original Mirrodin block, Fifth Dawn benefited from a design process that included head developer Randy Buehler. This resulted in a higher rate of cards transitioning from the design phase to the printed product, particularly at the common rarity level.

The design documents reveal several cards that underwent creative or mechanical shifts before release. For example, the card Treasure Finder transitioned to the printed set with only changes to its name and creature type. Similarly, the instant Spit and Polish became Stand Firm, maintaining its core function while adopting a new name.

The files also highlight mechanics and terminology that have since evolved. The Scry mechanic, created by Aaron Forsythe, was documented with the spelling Scrye during this era. Additionally, effects that would later be defined as exiling were described simply as removing a card from the game, as the exile mechanic was not officially introduced until the Magic 2010 rules update.

Not all designs reached the final set. Some cards, such as the 99 series designs like Trained Squire, were kept for development but ultimately cut. Other concepts, like the Angel of Immunity, were removed to avoid similarity with existing cards like Pristine Angel from the Darksteel set.
